New Google Technology to index text in digital photos and videos
Google kicked off the new year with its technology patent “RECOGNIZING TEXT IN IMAGES”
made public on Thursday.
The Patent was first filed on 29.06.2007 by two computer scientists Luc Vincent and Adrian Ulges, who also worked on Google Street View and Google Book Search.
This new technology will expand Google’s current search engine beyond static text.
According to the Abstract from the Patent, this is what the patent application is supposed to do:
- “Methods, systems, and apparatus including computer program products for using
extracted image text are provided. In one implementation, a computer-implemented
method is provided. The method includes receiving an input of one or more image
search terms and identifying keywords from the received one or more image search
terms. The method also includes searching a collection of keywords including
keywords extracted from image text, retrieving an image associated with extracted
image text corresponding to one or more of the image search terms, and presenting
the image.”
It will be a big challenge for Google in implementing the patent, should they have
plans to do so. Nevertheless, it will be a giant leap forward in the progression of
search technology should Google eventually succeed in implementing it.
