  • “Internet Marketing for Less than $500 a year” by Marcia Yudkin is a must read and a valuable reference tool for anyone trying to start or move a business online. This book will teach you how to cut expenses while increasing sales using very low cost and common sense marketing tactics. No more going into debt, or worse, using expensive traditional advertising techniques. Learn proper online etiquette to build good rapport with potential clients, customers and business associates while avoiding Spam accusations. A well written and easy read with many real life examples. Highly recommended.

  • Okay, I’m a professional web designer, so I really should not have been surprised that the advice in this book is extremely simplistic. Create an online community. Get people talking about your site by posting on forums and usenet. (Usenet? Prodigy? AOL? Aren’t we out of the 90s by now?) Send out emails.

I was, however, very surprised that so much of the information is seriously outdated. There’s a substantial amount of space given to mass emailing, now more commonly known as spam. As others have mentioned, there are lengthy discussions of “what’s a modem” and “reasons you, too, should consider being online” — discussions more appropriate to the pioneer internet conditions of ten or fifteen years ago.

I checked the copyright date carefully before I ordered this book. Despite the 2001 date, the entire book reads as though it were written quite some time earlier, suggesting that perhaps an earlier edition had been reprinted without being updated.

i will say this for Ms. Yudkin: she does know how to write compelling sales copy. She hooked me into buying this book. However, I won’t make the same mistake twice — if I see another of her books that looks interesting, I’ll be sure to find a copy to flip through prior to parting with my money.

I have been struggling with my website for awhile now, and I was about to throw in the towel when two great life-saving books came my way. This is one of them. I have learned how to cut costs, and save time while on-line. The other book I recommend is Guerrilla PR Wired by Michael levine. He offers a different slant but is still budget conscious.

  • This is an excellent book for those who have sole proprietorships or small businesses. Yudkin clearly explains both marketing strategies and basics about the internet. You do not need to be a computer guru to implement her suggestions. You can read a chapter, then go on-line and follow thru with her strategies. A highly recommended book.
